In the spring term of 2015, the School of Mechanical Engineering has welcomed a total of new 48 foreign students who are from America, Canada, France, Sweden, Norway, New Zealand, Singapore, Malaysia India, etc. On April 1st, 2015, the International Office together with Student Office held kite-flying festival as one of cultural activities for foreign students with the help of Student Union’s Foreign Student Center to promote communication and integration between students from different countries.

It was a sunny afternoon. Above 20 foreign students and Chinese students worked together to assemble and fly kites in the lawn in front of our school. Then sitting down in the lawn, they talked about their university life in China and abroad and shared the differences between Chinese and foreign cultures.

Kite-flying festival in April not only showed foreign students traditional characteristics of Chinese kite culture, but also integrated them into the warm family of our school for a stronger sense of belonging and a more intimate friendship between Chinese and foreign students.

School of Mechanical Engineering will continue to hold other activities for foreign students in spring term of 2015 apart from this one, such as Volunteering Education in Shanghai’s Gas Turbine primary school, City Puzzle, and photo contest of My SJTU Story, etc.

PS: a brief introduction of the Foreign Student Center

Set up in Nov. 2012, the Foreign Student Center is in the charge of both Student Union and International Office, a good example of exploration of international education and the related management in School of Mechanical Engineering. The center aims to serve all the foreign students in our school by not only helping them well integrate into the life in Shanghai Jiao Tong University and building a solid friendship with Chinese students, but also by letting Chinese students have access to broaden their horizons and gain a better understanding of universities and cultures abroad.
