Aerodynamics of Sails and Wind Turbines

The developments of sails and wind turbines will be presented in terms of historical development, aerodynamic theory and practical applications. Aerodynamics including lift and drag coefficients will be illustrated from conventional sailing to wind mills and modern wind turbines. Analysis and measurements of torque and power coefficients for a vertical axis wind turbine (VAWT) will be demonstrated. Our studies indicate that the angle of attack of turbine blades makes an enormous difference on wind turbine efficiency. An optimal pitch control strategy for a VAWT will be presented. Future research and innovation in wind power will be proposed.
