Biography

Dr. Zhiming Lu received Mphys and BSc from the University of Manchester, UK, and Shandong University, respectively. After finishing PhD in the University of Manchester in July. 2016, he continued his research in the University of Manchester as a research associate, funded by Unilever, UK. His research interest and expertise is mainly focused on surfactant, biosurfactant and polymer adsorption at various interfaces, with attention to the biologically, industrially and technologically relevant air-water and water-solid interfaces. He also has four years’ experience of experimenting in Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, UK, allowing him to develop deep insight in the working and physical principles of techniques such as neutron reflectivity and small angle neutron scattering for the characterisation of surfactants, biosurfactants, polymers and biopolymers at various interfaces.

Abstract

The structural information of biomaterials at interfaces and in solution is of great importance in the areas of personal care and medical treatment such as drug delivery and gene expressions. This work has centred on studying molecular structure and dynamics at wet interfaces under conditions mimicking biological and biomedical applications. Multiple techniques including Cryo-EM, DLS and SE will also be introduced in order to access direct information at molecular and cellular levels from various biointerfacial processes. The highlight of the work has been to precisely reveal protein molecular features underlying surface biocompatibility, a topic highly relevant to biomaterials development, tissue engineering, and medical implant deployment, which shed new light towards the understanding of the structure and dynamics of water in the biological environments.
