Abstract:
Due to the importance to the future energy solutions and other emerging needs, thermal engineering research has been growing, as evidenced by the increase in the participants and papers presented at the recent heat transfer conferences. One of the most active research areas in thermal engineering is micro/nanoscale heat transfer. For example, the biannual international conference series on Microscale and Nanoscale Heat and Mass Transfer (MNHMT) have been organized for five times with around 300 participants each time. Nanoscale radiative heat transfer is an important subarea, which includes nanoscale thermal radiation and radiative properties of nanostructures. Due to its importance to harvesting solar energy, this subarea has grown rapidly in the past decade. This lecture series is intended to give an introduction to the basic theories in the field of nano/microscale heat transfer. The first lecture starts from the kinetic theory of gasses to the introduction of the Boltzmann transport equation. Electron and phonon transports are very important for heat conduction in solids and for thermoelectric and other solid state devices. The second lecture discusses the electron and phonon transports and band structures. The last lecture deals with the basics of light-matter interactions and how to model the frequency dependent dielectric functions of metals, dielectric materials, and semiconductor materials. These lectures will stress the fundamental physics behind the theories and mathematical formulations.

Biography:
Zhuomin Zhang earned a Ph.D. degree from MIT and worked at NIST and University of Florida prior to joining Georgia Tech. He received his B.S. and M.S. degrees from the University of Science and Technology of China (Hefei). Professor is a Fellow of ASME, AAAS, and APS. Professor Zhang’s research interests are in micro/nanoscale heat transfer especially thermal radiation for energy conversion and temperature measurement. He has written a book on Nano/Microscale Heat Transfer, co-authored over 170 journal papers, and given over 300 invited and contributed presentations. He currently serves as an associate editor of the Journal of Heat Transfer and Journal of Quantitative Spectroscopy & Radiative Transfer. Professor Zhang was a recipient of the 1999 Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE) and the 2015 ASME Heat Transfer Memorial Award (in the Science category). He has also won a number of teaching, research, and best paper awards.
