Abstract

As the population of amputees grows to millions, there is an urgent need for new prosthetics technologies that can provide this large population with the best restoration of normal function possible. Advanced robotic prostheses, such as dexterous prosthetic hands and motorized prosthetic legs, have become commercially available. However, the function of these robotic devices is still limited due to lack of neural control and adaptation.

In this talk, I will focus on our research efforts in developing neural control for robotic upper- and lower-limb prostheses to enable limb amputees to use their prosthetic limbs intuitively, efficiently, and safely. Our innovative engineering approaches may further advance the function of artificial limbs and significantly improve the quality of life of individuals with limb amputations.

Biography

Dr. He (Helen) Huang is Professor in the Joint Department of Biomedical Engineering at North Carolina State University (NCSU) and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC), Director of the Rehabilitation Engineering Center, the University Faculty Scholar at NCSU, and adjunct Professor at the UNC Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and NC State Electrical and Computer Engineering.

Dr. Huang’s research interest lies in neural-machine interfaces for artificial limbs and exoskeletons, human-robot interaction, adaptive and optimal control of wearable robots, and human movement control. Her research has been sponsored by federal agencies (such as NSF, DOD, NIH, DARPA, and NIDILRR) and private companies (such as Össur and BionX). She was a recipient of the Delsys Prize for Innovation in Electromyography, the Mary E. Switzer Fellowship with the National Institute on Disability, Independent Living, and Rehabilitation Research (NIDILRR), and a NSF CAREER Award and was named NC State faculty scholar in 2015.

Dr. Huang serves/served as an Associate Editor for the Journal of Neuroengineering and Rehabilitation and IEEE Transaction on Biomedical Engineering. She is also on the Delsys Prize Review Board. She is a senior member of IEEE and a member of the Society for Neuroscience and Biomedical Engineering Society.
