Title:
Internal Combustion Engine Research at the Institute for Combustion Technology at RWTH Aachen University

Time: 9:30 to 10:30,Oct.18, 2016

Place: F310, School of Mechanical Engineering

Host: Huang Zhen, Professor

Abstract:

Research on internal combustion engines is one of the main research areas at ITV in Aachen with a focus on both modeling and experiments. One of the main topics is the development of Tailor-Made Fuels from Biomass for the application in internal combustion engines. Some of the work in this field will be presented first. Then, this talk will provide an overview of some of the experimental work for diesel engine combustion including high pressure spray combustion experiments, and combustion control for early injection diesel engines. On the modeling side, high-fidelity and reduced order combustion models for diesel engine combustion will be discussed with an emphasis on the effects of new biofuels on auto-ignition and emissions. Finally, for spark-ignition engines, gas-exchange is one of the most important topics. The development of a new computational framework and its application to predict the gas exchange in modern engines will also be presented.

Biography:

Prof. Heinz Pitsch heads the Institute for Combustion Technology, RWTH Aachen University, Germany. His main research interests are in combustion theory, modeling of turbulent reacting flows with large-eddy simulations, development and analysis of chemical kinetic reaction mechanisms, modeling of pollutant formation, development of numerical methods, investigation and modeling of combustion instabilities, and model applications to modern aircraft engine combustion, reciprocating engine combustion, and chemical processing. He also serves on The Combustion Institute Board of Directors, and has served as a former editorial board member of Combustion and Flame. He has been appointed as one of the Program Co-Chairs (PCCs) for the 37th International Symposium on Combustion in Dublin, Ireland.
