Abstract:
Mechatronics was coined as the synergistic integration of mechanical, electronics, and computation in the 1990’s.  Efforts by the industry and the research community in mechatronics during the past 20 years has make significant impact to the society as a whole.  Twenty years later, data, communication, and the human factor present new opportunities and challenges for mechatronics engineers. This presentation will attempt to point out these opportunities and challenges based on my own experience working in the area, interactions with researchers and industrialists, and my experience as a program manager at the US National Science Foundation.
