Abstract
Functional catalysts centers on the clean and efficient conversion of both fossil and renewable energy resources as well as remediation of polluted eco-environment, while their efficacy and widespread implements highly depend on the operation processes as well designated functions. This talk would brief the research in my group in exploring new catalysts, developing reliable process engineering and reactors for ultra-low emission catalytic combustion of natural gas and biogas, biogas upgrading, bio-oil upgrading as well as enhanced solar energy harvesting. Through tailoring the Redox and nanoporosity of the catalytic materials, effective catalysts have ever been developed and applied in flameless combustors (commercialized) with great potential to extend into ultra-clean biogas gas vehicles. Applying the same principle, a stable reforming catalyst realized 1200+ hour stable operation in a novel reactor that may directly utilize nano-scale powder catalysts in avoidance of complicated manufacturing and corresponding performance deterioration. The catalyst design principle was also successfully transferred into design a superb hydrogenation catalyst which is highly desired in bio-oil upgrading. Finally, our research activities in design nanoscaled semiconductor photocatalysts for enhanced solar energy harvesting will be introduced.

Biography
Dr Zheng Jiang is a lecturer in Energy technology leading a small group of 10 members with Postgraduate students and researchers at University of Southampton (UoS), and a Sir Jonh Houghton Hugh Price Fellow in Jesus College at Oxford University. Before he joined in UoS, he was a lecturer in renewable energy at Exeter university from 2012-2013 after 3-year working in Oxford Chemistry department and Jesus College as a Sir John Houghton Junior Research Fellow in renewable energy. He was an associate professor in the State Key Laboratory of Multiphase Complex Systems, Institute of Process Engineering of Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), working in developing both novel fluidized bed deNOx and catalytic combustion processes. Zheng received his PhD from Research Center for Eco-Environmental Sciences, CAS, in 2005 honored with CAS president prize just before he joined in Oxford Chemistry for his 1st postdoc.
With support from EPSRC, EU FP7, Royal Society, Royal Academy of Engineering, Shell, P&G, NSFC, MOST, Oxford University and Southampton University, his research mainly centers on design functional materials and new catalytic processes for energy conversion and environment protection. He authored 60+ peer-reviewed journal papers and 6 patents. As an active reviewer, he regularly assesses manuscripts for 20+ international journals, including JCAS, Energy Environ. Sci., Chem. Sci., Chem Sci., Chemcomm., IEEE proceedings, J. Catal., Appl. Catal. A &B, etc.
