Abstract

The first part of talk will present our recent numerical analysis of the effect of inflow conditions on the loading status of large-scale wind turbines. The simulation was done on a 10-meter diameter NREL turbine with the exact blade geometry. The aerodynamic loading and wake structures are investigated. The wind shear results in an asymmetric wake structure. The inflow turbulence and wind shear accelerates the dissipation of wake structures downstream as well. It also shown that the existence of turbulence in wind shear enhances the turbulence level downstream.
In the second part of the talk a new model (Fluxline Theory) for analyzing vertical axis wind turbines (VAWTs) is introduced. It enables more accurate analysis of VAWTs and, in particular, optimal design of pitch adjustable VAWTs (cycloturbine), which is able to achieve a power coefficient close to Betz limit of horizontal axis wind turbines. A prototype experiment and CFD simulation are also adopted to validate the model predictions.
