Abstract
The objective of design is to create a product that fulfills prescribed product requirements. The product can be an instrument, a machine, a software system, a plan, or a policy. Therefore, design, especially innovative and creative design, affects greatly every part of our everyday life.  In the talk, the speaker will introduce a new design methodology, Environment-Based Design (EBD), that he has proposed to provide a step-by-step procedure to support the generation of innovative and creative design solutions. The EBD methodology includes environment analysis, conflict identification, and solution generation. Some of the industrial applications of the methodology will be presented to show its implications.
In addition, this talk will briefly introduce the academic evaluation system in Canada.

Biography
Dr. Yong Zeng is a Professor in the Concordia Institute for Information Systems Engineering at Concordia University. He is NSERC Co-Chair in Aerospace Design Engineering (July 2015-June 2020) and was the Canada Research Chair (Tier II) in design science (April 2004 - August 2014). He is an Editor-in-Chief of Journal of Integrated Design and Process Science (published by IOS) and an editorial board member of Computers in Industry (by Elsevier). His research aims to understand and improve creative design activities, which crosses design, computer science, mathematics, linguistics, and neurocognitive science. He has proposed the Environment-Based Design theory.

Prior to joining in Concordia in August 2003, he was a research associate at National Research Council of Canada for about two years after he received his Ph.D. from Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering at the University of Calgary in 2001. He obtained another PhD degree in Computational Mechanics from Dalian University of Technology in 1992, where he also received his Master's degree in 1989. Between his two PhD studies, he was a faculty member in the Department of Civil and Architectural Engineering at the Institute of Logistics Engineering, where he completed his B.Eng degree in Structural Engineering in 1986.
