Generating Electricity during Human Walking: Biomechanics and Device Design
Posted by:Institute of Robotics     Time:2016-06-01

Time:14:00 to 15:00 , Thursday,June 2nd
Place:F210, School of Mechanical Engineering
Speaker:Prof. Qingguo Li
Host:Dr. Peter B. Shull (Institute of Robotics)

Abstract
Humans are a rich source of energy. Biomechanical energy harvesting—generating electricity from people during daily activities—is a promising alternative to batteries for powering increasingly sophisticated portable devices.  Effectively harvesting energy from walking requires understanding of walking biomechanics and physiology as well as engineering innovations. In this talk, I will discuss the development of two energy harvesting devices: a knee-mounted energy harvester and an energy harvesting backpack.  It will include human walking biomechanics, mechanical system design, modelling, and human experimental results.

Bio
Dr. Qingguo Li received his PhD degree from School of Engineering, Simon Fraser University (SFU), BC, Canada, in 2006. Dr. Li was the recipient of the Governor General's Gold Medal in 2006. From November 2005 to December 2008, he worked as a post-doc at the school of Kinesiology, SFU on the biomechanical energy harvesting project and the results have been published in the journal Science. The harvester was selected as one of the 50 most important inventions of the year 2008 by the Time magazine. Dr. Li was an inventor of four US patents on energy harvesting technology and served as co-founder of an energy harvesting company, Bionic Power Inc. Dr. Li joined Queen's University at Kingston in 2009 and currently he is an associate professor in the Department of Mechanical and Material Engineering. His current research interests include energy harvesting, wearable robotics, and wearable sensors for human movement analysis.
