Topic: Behavioral effects of time and culture on human performance

Abstract: In many control situations where human life is at stake, minor errors can result in dire consequences and hence it is essential to analyze user’s behavior and task characteristics carefully in order to improve task performance and safety. Time usage behavior is related to how people manage time when handling many jobs in multiple task situations. Researchers have classified the differing time orientations of people as Monochronicity and Polychronicity. These types of behavior can influence the manner in which an operator interacts with complex systems. Differences among cultures have already been shown using differing measurement scales. This talk attempts to show differences between the two groups in terms of control strategy and control performance in a process control domain and presents a hypothetical model for the potential causes of these differences using performance resource functions, all of which can have important implications for the training and selection of personnel in multitask situations, such as industrial process control.
